There is a shortage in most of what Andriacco called the "helping professions" -- teachers, nurses, and clergymen -- because people are seeking jobs that pay better and offer more status, he said.
Also, many ministry opportunities have become available to the layperson since the Second Vatican Council in the 1960s, he said, allowing a smaller number of priests to oversee the same amount of work.
Catholics also had larger families in the past, he said, and many parents would encourage one of their sons to pursue the priesthood.
